Saudi Arabia Aims to Disrupt the Auto Industry with These Radical EVs

Meet CEER Motors, a new automaker from Saudi Arabia, which just revealed its first two models. CEER Motors has the backing of the Saudi government, formed as a joint venture between the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn. Although the brand was announced years ago, we’re only now seeing its first two products, and the Exobot Sedan and SUV wear some of the most radical bodywork we’ve ever witnessed.

The headlights span the entire front end, with a thin LED line disrupted by 32 vertical LED dashes, referencing 1932, the year Saudi Arabia became a kingdom. The main headlamps appear to sit below, and the same look is echoed in the taillights. The SUV has trapezoidal wheel arches and a pronounced bumper to create a more off-road-ready look.

Both the SUV and Sedan are adorned with dramatic gullwing doors, which feature glass where there’s typically metal, à la the McLaren Senna. This extra window in the doors can change between tinted and opaque at the touch of a button. The triangular design of the forged aluminum wheels is inspired by Saudi architecture.

The Exobot Sedan measures 207.1 inches long, 82.7 inches wide, and 56.3 inches tall, making it about as long as an Audi A8, but it’s roughly six inches wider and around two inches lower. The SUV is quite a bit shorter from nose to tail than the sedan at 197.6 inches, and stands about 10 inches taller. CEER claims the windshield is the largest ever produced, at 94.5 inches long, and says that the eye-catching 15 degree angle at which it sits is designed to improve aerodynamics. The glass wears an “advanced reflective coating” to protect passengers from the sun.

Under the bizarre bodywork sits a tri-motor all-wheel-drive electric powertrain, which in its highest specification, CEER claims, will be capable of a walloping 1111 horsepower and 1106 pound-feet of torque. That would be enough to get the Exobot Sedan to 62 mph in 2.1 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph, while the SUV would need 2.4 seconds to hit 62 mph and would be limited to 130 mph.

The three electric motors are fed by a 112-kWh battery, and CEER quotes an NEDC range of 347 miles for the SUV and 416 miles for the sedan, which we’d estimate would be around 265 and 318 miles using the EPA’s methodology. Despite having an 800-volt architecture, the max charge rate is listed at 250 kilowatts, and CEER claims the Exobot EVs can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes.

The Exobot models use steer-by-wire technology, eliminating the need for a steering column and allowing for the vehicles’ more radical shape. Rear-wheel steering improves agility in tight urban settings and stability at higher speeds. Both EVs ride on air suspension, and the SUV can achieve 11.8 inches of ground clearance.

The Exobot Sedan and SUV will serve as CEER’s flagship models, with the company promising to launch compact and mid-size models as it expands its lineup to seven vehicles by 2030. All of CEER’s models will be built at a new factory in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia. Sales will likely start in Saudi Arabia and expand to other Middle Eastern countries, but we won’t be shocked if CEER Motors has more global ambitions down the line.
